The Story on the Boots

To start the first day of vacation at the ranch, families gather at the barn, anxiously awaiting the assignment of their horse and the adventure of their first ride of the week.  A simple trip down the ranch's dirt road is the first outing with horse and saddle for some guests.  This, our lesson ride, is when new riders learn to communicate with their horse and when they experience the first taste of the views. During this ride, many guests notice the boots that sit upside down on fenceposts along the road. "What is the story with the boots?" they ask. [...]

It’s A Wonderful Life

It's true: you really can't beat life on Drowsy Water Ranch.  Every day, we count our blessings as work together as a family under Colorado's bluebird skies.  While it comes with long hours and often endless to-do lists, the rewards of sharing this life with our guests make it all worthwhile.  We all enjoy telling people about our life and our ranch and we all truly love what we do; not everyone can say that about their career path and we know it.  We can count many reasons why a visit to this ranch life makes the perfect getaway and we're not going to [...]

I admit it. I confess. And, to Kroger stores everywhere, I am sorry. I, like many of my Drowsy Water Ranch counterparts, am a baked good snob. You see, it all started so innocently. In the summer, we just show up for lunch and dinner and end up getting spoiled. For those few, fleeting weeks that we welcome families and friends here at Drowsy Water Ranch, we also welcome to our diet homemade baked goods: homemade cinnamon rolls, homemade breads, homemade cookies, cakes, and pies. Yes, we are spoiled so much in summer that, in winter, grocery store bought baked goods just don't do the trick, [...]

Fall Cow-tivities

We look forward to this day every year.  Maybe its because we love to work cows, or maybe we love to get outside on warm fall days, or maybe it is just because we have a tremendously silly sense of humor, but we all enjoy the day we wean the calves using what we call the "easy-weaners".   First, we round up our herd, then separate the cows from their young.Next, we load the calves in the trailer and take them to our neighbor's house down the road. There, we run each calf through the squeeze chute and insert a really silly looking yellow tag in [...]

Two, Tractors, and Trucks

Hey folks, it is--or was--just Chase's Birthday. We celebrated amongst friends, family, and leftover turkey--his birthday falling the day after Thanksgiving. In his honor, I offered to write him a little ditty but was quickly refused. In his true-blue, independent spirit, Chase said he'd rather have it come from him, not me. So here you have it, folks, birthday thoughts from a two-year old.  Howdy folks. My mom said I could do this thing on my own. I'm going to tell you about my life as a two year old at Drowsy Water. First, we need to establish some rules. Rule Number One:I am in charge.Got [...]

Drowsy Water Ranch Easter Egg Hunt

At Drowsy Water Ranch, we can host an extreme Easter Egg hunt. We can hide eggs all over the ranch and then the family has to find them. It might take all day, or all week, or all month. We go all out. Speaking of going all out, we are getting ready to go all out for another summer of fun on the family dude ranch. The reservations for the summer are great and we look forward to meeting and spending time with all of the great families and friends we welcome into our home here on this Colorado Dude Ranch. We have a [...]

iOutdoors: Drowsy Water has “app” for fun

Ken is currently slaving away to get this year's Drowsy Water Ranch newsletter to the printer in the coming week. We'll be mailing out the paper copy soon and hope you'll read your copy cover to cover to learn about ranch news. This is a sneak peek at one of the articles about our kids' program, a true highlight of a Colorado Dude Ranch Family Vacation! And, if you need a copy sent to you, let us know! We'd be happy to send one pony express. Driving up the dirt road, twelve-year old Tommy started to wonder just what his mom and dad had [...]

Small Town-igans

Part of living on a Colorado Dude Ranch is, usually, living in or near a small town. At Drowsy Water Ranch, we have Hot Sulphur Springs, a tiny town about six miles from the ranch and Granby, a slightly larger, but still tiny town about seven miles from the ranch. Living here, you get to know the people that live in town and you have "small-town" occurrences nearly everyday. Here are few small-town examples I've noted in the past few days. 1. First off, Drowsy Water Ranch entered a float in the Hot Sulphur Springs parade during the closing ceremonies of the 100th Anniversary [...]
